Man Made Man: Masculinity in Fashion Photograph

As a former male model and fashion photographer I am fascinated bythe visual representation of masculinity. Currently, this representation is inthe midst of a shift away from traditional, singular notions of masculinitytowards a more diverse and inclusive representation. This paper looks toanalyze the role of fashion photography in the changing landscape of masculinityin male fashion photographs. I will be examining the historic creation ofsingular hegemonic masculine ideals and comparing them to currentrepresentations in male fashion photography that have become more complex andinclusive of gestures and elements that where once ascribed to non-normative ideals. My research has uncovered the role of authors who create male fashionphotographs and the process they follow in the creation of new narratives thatare more diverse in the current climate of accelerated digitized media.
